Weight loss on a budget

Not everyone can afford a gym membership or a personal trainer to help them get in shape. As a matter of fact, most people just don’t have the money or the time to travel to the gym before or after their full time jobs. How can a person on a budget lose weight and not lose money?

You can find basic dieting tips and health or fitness information on the web, in the library or at the book store. You can surf and skim for ideas without spending a penny. Get as much information as you can, and apply what you learn.

Here are some quick and easy money-saving weight loss tips:

  • Walk as much as possible.
  • Drink water instead of soft drinks.
  • Use the stairs, not the elevator.
  • Stand instead of sit.
  • Do sit-ups, leg lifts, or arm curls while watching television.
  • Eat less junk food and more fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat less meat.
  • Never go for seconds.
  • Eat slowly, and stop before you are totally full.
  • Always get a good night of rest.
  • Try to find at least 30 minutes a day to relax, clear your mind and reduce stress.

These tips will help you to increase your metabolism and lower your calorie intake, without the membership fee and special food costs. If you commit to a healthier lifestyle you can lose weight while keeping your wallet fat. :)

    Great weight loss tips. Walking is the major one. Many people think that they have to run, run, and run to lose weight. Start simple and build up your routine and pace. That way, you won’t be discouraged. Weight loss takes time.

    I’m actually on the opposite end of the boat. I’m teaching people how to gain weight.

  • If you’re not careful, some of these weight loss meal plans will eat up your budget. I tried the Body for Life program a few years ago and it was costing me $300 a month just for all the supplements and replacement meals they convinced me that I needed.

    I would just like to elaborate on some points you made (all are good BTW). Park a couple of blocks from your office, then walk the rest. If you live quite close to your home, then just walk (you’ll save on gas too!). Also, try getting off the elevator a couple of floors from your office then take the stairs.

  • This is a great list, though I do caution against limiting the amount of meat you eat, lean protein is too important. I would just be more frugal with buying meat and just look for bargains at the market or clip coupons. Replacing meats with Eggs would be a cheaper alternative too though, and still give you good protein.

  • Great tips! Another good one is when a drive to run an errand will take you less than 5 mins, walk instead. Great for those who live in the city. Save gas and lose weight.

    Walking is free and is a great way to lose weight and feel better about ones self. Try to get into a habit of walking a few times a week and then everyday for better health.

    I’ve always thought walking is the easiest and best form of exercise. Have you considered any online fitness sites? I’ve been looking, just haven’t found it.

  • Oh it is an old article but i have found it only now, searching for budget and weight loss keywords. But you know when i am reading the beginning of your article where you said that not every human have money going to the gym, i am thinking “If those people are overweight, they have enough money for a lot of food, so they also can have money going to the gym”. Am i not right? You can reduce the amount of food in your refrigerator, save your money, and spend them for the gym. And you know the gym is better than doing exercises at home. I can say from my own experience that it is extremely hard not to be lazy and make exercises at home every day. And i have found out that exercising is easier when you are going to the gym, because you know that you have paid money for that :-)

    Regular exercises such as walking, jogging and healthy eating such as vegetables, lean meats and fishes are a must if you are serious to lose weight.

    However we need to take note that in order to have permanent weight loss we must make sure that we perform the above regularly and on a long-term basis.

  • Great tips. Drinking lots of water is a biggie. I like to find groups that get together to play Ultimate Frisbee or other sports. Sports motivate me to push myself harder and I have a lot more fun than the alternatives. I’ve also found hiking to be quite enjoyable as I live very close to the mountains.
